Why do I only get likes from people I'm not into?

By the bestsideofyou teamLast updated

If your likes come mostly from people you'd never date, your profile is probably speaking to the wrong crowd. Photos set the first impression, prompts set the type of person who replies, and settings decide who sees you at all. The fix isn't fewer likes. It's giving the right people a reason to recognize themselves in your profile.

The checklist

What you show

  • My photos show the life I actually have, not only nights out or the gym
  • My prompts mention things the people I like would also care about
  • I say what I'm looking for, kindly and clearly

Your settings

  • My age range and distance fit who I actually want to meet
  • My dating intentions in my profile are set to what I really want

Who you like

  • I send likes to people I'd actually date, not everyone
  • I like a specific photo or answer, with a comment when I can

Your photos set the crowd

Six photos from nights out attract people who want nights out. If you spend most Saturdays hiking or cooking, show that. The photo guide explains how to make six photos show six sides of you.

Your prompts set who replies

Specific interests pull in people who share them. A broad answer pulls in everyone.

We'll get along if · before
You're fun and easygoing.
We'll get along if · after
You'll split a crossword with me on Sunday and argue about whether 'ok' counts as a word.
Everyone thinks they're fun. Not everyone wants the crossword. That's the point.

“I'm looking for” is the place to say what you want, kindly. “I'll fall for you if” and “I geek out on” help the right people see you're on the same page.

Like the people you want

Hinge has said it looks at your activity when suggesting people. Liking everyone sends a vague signal. Liking people you'd actually date, with a short comment on something specific, is better for you either way.

What to change first

  1. 1Swap one photo for one that shows how you really spend your weekends.
  2. 2Rewrite one prompt around an interest the people you want would share.
  3. 3Check that your dating intentions match what you're looking for.

Try your new answer in the prompt checker to see if it's specific enough.

Questions people ask

Does Hinge learn my type?

Hinge has said it uses your activity to suggest people, but it hasn't published the details. Liking people you'd actually date, rather than everyone, is a sensible habit either way.

Should I list what I don't want?

Usually not. A list of dislikes reads as negative and rarely filters the right people out. Saying what you do want works better.

Is it bad to get lots of likes I don't want?

Not at all. It means people notice you. The goal is to shape who notices, not to get fewer likes.
