Why am I not getting likes on Hinge?
By the bestsideofyou teamLast updated
If nobody is liking your Hinge profile, the cause is almost always your first photo, generic prompts, or filters that shrink the pool more than you realize. In that order. Go through the checklist below honestly, then change the first thing on the list, not everything at once, so you can tell what helped.
The checklist
Tick what's true for your profile right now. Anything unticked is a likely reason.
Photos
- My first photo shows my face clearly, in daylight, with nobody else in it
- At least one photo shows my full body
- No sunglasses or caps in the first two photos
- Every photo is from the last two years
- My six photos don't all look the same (three gym selfies, three nights out)
Prompts
- Each answer has a detail someone could ask about: a place, a name, a number
- None of my answers is a list ("Coffee, travel, dogs")
- None of them is a joke I found online
- At least one answer is easy to reply to
Settings
- My age range and distance aren't narrower than I really mean
- I haven't set dealbreakers on things I'd actually be flexible about
- My profile is complete: six photos, three prompts, basics filled in
Location and pool
- I live somewhere with a reasonable number of people my age on the app
- I've been active recently, not just checking in once a fortnight
- I've given changes a week or two before judging them
Why photos come first
People decide whether to look at the rest of your profile from the first photo. If it's dark, old, a group shot or hides your eyes, the prompts underneath never get read. The Hinge photos guide covers what each of the six slots should do and the order that works.
Why generic prompts get skipped
A like on Hinge is often a reply to something specific: a photo or an answer. If your answers could belong to anyone (“I love to travel”, “Brunch, gym, Netflix”), there's nothing to reply to. Compare two answers to “I'm in my element when”:
I'm with friends, or out on a long walk.
Walking the long way home along the canal after brunch at Lou's, which starts at 11 because Dee is always late.
The same goes for “I go crazy for” and “A shower thought I recently had”: one specific thing beats a list of safe ones. If you want an answer that hands people an easy reply, try “Two truths and a lie”. Paste any answer into the prompt checker to see how it reads.
Settings and pool size
Narrow age ranges, short distances and lots of dealbreakers all shrink the number of people who can see you. That's fine if you mean them. If you set them on day one and never looked again, widen them a little. In a small town, the pool is simply smaller; that's not a verdict on your profile.
What to change first
- 1Replace your first photo with a clear, recent, daylight photo of your face, alone. This is the change most likely to matter.
- 2Rewrite your weakest prompt so it contains one thing only you would say: a place, a habit or a small story.
- 3Widen your filters slightly, especially distance and any dealbreakers you added without thinking.
Then give it a week or two before judging. If likes are coming in but nothing turns into a match, that's a different problem: see why you're not getting matches.
Questions people ask
How long should I wait before deciding my profile isn't working?
Give any change a week or two of normal use. Judging a new photo after one evening tells you more about that evening than about the photo.
Does paying for Hinge+ or HingeX fix getting no likes?
Paid features change what you can see and do, not what people think of your profile. Fix the photos and prompts first; then decide whether paying is worth it to you.
Should I delete my profile and start again?
We don't know how Hinge treats new or re-created profiles beyond what it has said publicly, so we can't promise that a restart helps. Improving the profile you have is the safer first step.
Is it my looks?
Usually it's the photos, not the face: bad light, old pictures, sunglasses, or a crowded first photo. Those are fixable with the photos you already own.
